Last month, the Center received a call about a great-horned owl found on the ground along a local ATV trail. Two of our rehabbers went out and rescued it with help from the amazing rescuer. The location in which the owl was rescued from helped rule out some diagnoses, like being hit by a roadway or a human-caused injury, but staff still kept them in mind. Once back at the Center, we found the owl to be very thin and had evidence of parasites. Typically, this is the case for many birds that spend long periods of time on the ground. Once our rehabbers determined what kind of parasites were present, the appropriate anti-parasitic medication was chosen and the owl improved through treatment. While in treatment for parasites, the staff also focused on helping the owl reach a healthy weight to support its continued recovery. Once no evidence of parasites was found, the owl was been recently moved to an outdoor enclosure, where it is now reacclimating to its natural environment.
