Recently we received our first snow shower of the year, and with the colder temperatures come certain human-wildlife conflicts. Rodents and other critters like to find their way into our houses during winter in an attempt to stay cozy and warm. Even though we adore our wild neighbors, we don’t necessarily enjoy it when they become roommates!
Below are some ways you can deter mice, squirrels, and other critters from taking up residence in your house this winter.
DO:
✅ Check your roof for any small holes or cracks that need to be fixed. Flying squirrels can fit through a hole that’s only an inch in diameter!
✅ Use strong-smelling scents like peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil to deter them from entering your house.
✅ Store all bird seed or other potential food sources in appropriate containers.
DO NOT:
❌ Use poison to get rid of rodents! It doesn’t just harm rodents, but any animal that might eat the poison OR eat the rodent that ingested it.
❌ Use glue traps! They are not a humane way to get rid of rodents, and lots of other animals can get trapped in them and die as well.
